Shillong: Lawyers in Shillong are holding the line. Both the Shillong Bar Association and the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association refuse to back down from their demand to fire Advocate General Amit Kumar. The two groups cited ongoing grievances regarding how Kumar handles his duties for the state.
Representatives met with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on September 16 to air their complaints. The session lasted a long time. They left the meeting with plans to talk again in two weeks. Kishore Gautam, secretary general of the High Court association, confirmed the status of their negotiations on Monday. “We had a meeting with the CM recently. Amit Kumar will not appear for another two weeks. We will meet the CM again after two weeks,” Gautam said.
The state government previously ordered Kumar to step back from all court appearances for two weeks starting September 2. This move followed an earlier sit-down led by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui. The government currently uses this time to review the lawyers' formal complaints. While the associations describe their recent interaction with the Chief Minister as cordial, they remain resolute in their push for a personnel change.
