Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stood by Advocate General Amit Kumar on Monday. He rejected mounting pressure from the Shillong Bar Association and the High Court Bar Association to suspend or remove the state official. The legal bodies want him out after alleged remarks made during a recent court hearing.
Sangma avoided discussing the specific comments or the hearing circumstances. He focused on the state government backing Kumar. The Chief Minister touted his legal guidance and hard work. He told reporters, "I want to say that the state of Meghalaya is very lucky to have a person in the form of Amit Kumar as our AG."
Kumar helped various departments clear legal hurdles. Sangma noted he was thankful the lawyer chose Meghalaya over private practice in Delhi or the Supreme Court. The government remains happy with his performance. Officials are not weighing in on the merit of the lawyers' demands.
