Shillong: Lawyers in Shillong are back at their desks. The High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association ended their work boycott immediately following a joint meeting on October 9. Members return to court duties starting the next working day. The strike ends. The fight goes on.
The Joint Executive Committee reviewed a September 30 resolution that originally pulled attorneys from the bench. This reversal follows feedback from local practitioners and concerns from the Jowai and Nongstoin Bar Associations about how the strike hurt litigants and the court system. Despite the return to work, the associations remain locked in their bid to oust Advocate General Amit Kumar.
K. Ch. Gautam and T. Lyngwa signed the notice confirming the demand is, in their words, "firm, unequivocal and non-negotiable." The groups pledged to swap the boycott for more sustained, peaceful tactics to protect the dignity of the profession. They insist the movement focuses on institutional integrity rather than personal vendettas. Expect details on these new protest forms soon.
