HYC Targets Conrad Sangma Over Advocate General Appointment

Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council slammed Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday. They challenged his defense of Advocate General Amit Kumar. HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem questioned if the appointment relied on personal favors instead of legal merit. He pointed to the Chief Minister’s claims that his late father, Purno A. Sangma, had ties to Kumar.

Synrem demanded clarity on that relationship. He wants to know if the connection is based on family or friendship. Back in 2008 and 2009, Purno A. Sangma allegedly pushed for Kumar to get the job. However, then-Chief Minister Dr. Donkupar Roy picked Ganol A. Massar instead. Synrem praised that older choice as a move that respected local expertise.

The council rejects the idea that Kumar is the only lawyer who can defend the state. Synrem noted, "The state has produced lawyers who are capable of taking up this responsibility. It is not as if Amit Kumar alone can defend the government or advise it." He argued that Meghalaya has plenty of capable professionals ready to step in.

The group claims the government is being hypocritical. They argue the push to keep Kumar clashes with the official Vocal for Local campaign. They want the administration to back its own slogan by hiring local talent. Synrem insists the ongoing defense of the Advocate General needs real scrutiny.
