Shillong: A three-year-old child from Domkyrkoh village died on October 1 while en route to a health facility. Poor road connectivity prevented timely medical intervention, according to VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit. He addressed the incident Sunday, pointing to a systemic failure in rural infrastructure.
Basaiawmoit slammed the NPP-led government for its claims of progress. He argued that the tragedy exposes the massive gap between state rhetoric and the reality on the ground. People in several regions remain stranded without basic services. The government must quit defending its record, he said.
"The government claims to be working for development, but this incident shows that things are not as they should be under the leadership of the NPP government," Basaiawmoit told reporters. He called for a shift in how the state manages road projects. Officials often ignore the immediate needs of remote areas.
Development is a right, not a favor. Basaiawmoit insisted that road construction needs to follow a strict priority list. The state must build where connectivity determines life or death. Rural access to healthcare depends on the quality of these routes, and the current allocation of funds fails to meet that urgency.
