Shillong: Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit dropped a 10-point list of demands on the Assembly floor this Tuesday. He leads the Voice of the People Party. The list hits hard on governance, land protection, and hiring practices. He wants the government to clean up its act.
Basaiawmoit pushed for the immediate end of the Lumpongdeng resort project. He wants a full white paper on its environmental impact, land use, and true financial costs. He aired concerns about one individual involved in that project, the Rongalgre multi-purpose ground, a Mendipathar liquor factory, and Eklavya Model Residential Schools.
The party chief demanded an overhaul of how teachers are treated. He specifically called for a review of TET requirements for veterans and an examination of the Private College Act, 2025. "The VPP, he said, was not opposed to development or investment but to projects without accountability that compromised land, environment and people’s rights." He also cited the loss of UGC pay scales and the misuse of teachers for election work as major failures.
Transparency in hiring remains a top priority. He called for an inquiry into the West Jaintia Hills District Selection Committee exam and wants it scrapped over malpractice claims. Beyond that, the party wants an end to rehiring retirees and faster pay for Home Guards. He also took aim at land deals and the state land bank, demanding an end to backdoor sales. He finished by calling for a scientific framework for small miners and a crackdown on illegal foreigners.
