Shillong: The Garo Students’ Union in Tura is pushing the state government for a total overhaul of the local education system. On September 15, union leaders demanded the immediate provincialisation of all eligible deficit schools that want to join the government fold. These institutions have educated rural students for decades while facing constant uncertainty.
The group insists the current setup creates unnecessary, unfair hurdles for staff. They called for a fast and clear process to fix these delays. "The government must establish a transparent, objective and time-bound mechanism for provincialising all eligible and willing deficit schools," the GSU stated in a recent release.
Teachers are fed up. They deal with inconsistent pay and shaky job security while performing essential work. The union demands the state stop using the Structured Pay Framework for sanctioned posts. They argue this system creates unjustified pay gaps between employees doing the same job. Workers deserve dignity, not administrative excuses. The GSU is pushing for a full review of how this framework affects all teacher groups to ensure no one is left behind. They believe these two steps will solve most of the issues currently hurting the region’s educators.
