Shillong: Eight teachers organizations in Meghalaya joined forces Saturday to form the Meghalaya Unified Teachers Association at Students Field in Jaiaw. The new group aims to secure better pay, service benefits, and financial stability for staff across multiple school categories. Aristotle C. Rymbai took the helm as president, while Nathaniel Edmund Nongrum serves as general secretary.
MUTA consolidates representation for teachers from the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, fourth teachers, and upper primary schools under the Structured Pay Framework. The union wants the Sixth State Pay Commission to include these categories in its upcoming recommendations. This inclusion should resolve pay disparities and guarantee consistent salary updates. MUTA stated the move is necessary because it would help ensure regular pay revisions and address disparities in the financial treatment of teachers.
The association demands uniform leave policies, maternity benefits, healthcare coverage, medical reimbursements, and loan access. It also calls for a one-time special package for senior staff and the full payout of SSA and RMSA salaries in a single instalment. By merging these organisations, the teachers hope to build a unified front to force improvements in working conditions.
