NIT Meghalaya Holds Top 100 Spot in National Engineering Rankings

Shillong: NIT Meghalaya claimed the 83rd spot in the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2025. Prof. Anup Dandapat, Dean of Academic Affairs, credited the result to the leadership of Director Prof. Pinakeswar Mahanta. The school moved to its permanent Sohra campus two years ago. Rapid growth followed. The institute now ranks in the 1,200 to 1,400 band for the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

It also sits in the 501 to 600 band for Asia rankings and the 791 to 800 band for QS Asia. Technical output remains high. The team fabricated two semiconductor chips using local tech and sent 12 more for production as part of the Semicon India program. Faculty members hold spots among the top five percent of researchers globally, while others secured Fulbright and IET fellowships.

New academic reforms now offer BTech students long-term industry internships after their third year. "After implementing the long-term internship programme, we have observed a considerable improvement in students’ placement prospects and their annual salary packages," Dandapat said. A mechanical engineering grad even hit the third rank nationally in last year's GATE exam. By 2027-28, the school will launch an integrated BSc-BEd degree.

Enrollment is robust. BTech, MSc, and MCA courses hit 100 percent occupancy. MTech programs filled 75 to 80 percent of seats. The school supports a diverse body with 73 to 75 percent of students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. Financial aid remains a priority. Around 200 students get full scholarships, while the institute grants over Rs 1 crore in tuition waivers and distributes Rs 6.5 crore annually in PhD and MTech fellowships. "Our endeavour is to ensure that education is accessible to everyone and that no student is forced to discontinue studies because of financial difficulties," Dandapat added.
