Shillong: Education officials hit the Damal Asim Deficit Higher Secondary School this past Thursday to stop the local dropout crisis. The Block Resource Centre of Dadenggre teamed up with the school to host an awareness program centered on the impact of early marriage. Dropout numbers remain high. The community needs to act.
Block Mission Coordinator Tengme M Marak pointed to data showing early marriage forces students out of class and stunts regional growth. She wants parents, teachers, and the local Nokma to push for student re-admission. "Urging the community to work toward a zero-dropout rate, Marak also suggested introducing integrated learning activities such as music and sports to keep students constructively engaged."
P G Momin, the local Nokma and former school headmaster, noted that while the region produces more educated people, few represent the community when it counts. He warned the youth against spending too much time on social media. Momin promised to support future counseling efforts for local kids.
Phangcheng Ch Sangma, a Cluster Resource Person, told students to build skills for their future careers. He stressed that students must secure birth certificates and Aadhaar enrollment to grab government financial benefits. The event also featured input from the Medical Department, ICDS representatives, and the school headmaster.
