Shillong: Forest officials struck illegal logging operations in West Garo Hills on October 21. A team led by the Hollaidanga Range Forest Officer raided sites near Bhaitbari following specific tips. They acted under the direct authority of the Divisional Forest Officer for the West and South-West Garo Hills Territorial Division.
Officers targeted Belbari first. They found 40 Sal logs abandoned at the site. The operators fled. They pulled the machinery apart and vanished before the team arrived. The haul was moved to the Hollaidanga Range headquarters.
The team hit Gasbari Sorokpara next. They caught an active mill in operation. They dismantled the gear on the spot. Officials seized the engine, band saw, and other related machinery. DFO Rupanker K Marak promised to keep the pressure on. He stated, "Strict monitoring and anti-smuggling operations will continue across the district to dismantle illicit timber networks."
