Kohima: The Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) is calling on the Nagaland government to step in and end the standoff between the Centre Chakhesang Youth Organisation (CCYO) and the state Forest Department. Tensions flared after the Wildlife Crime Control Unit (WCCU) in Dimapur detained Vezhoto Hesuh. CYF President Kevesa Khamo labeled the arrest arbitrary and criticized the department for lacking the commitment to reach a reasonable solution.
The organization insists that the state must respect Article 371A of the Indian Constitution. This provision protects Naga customary practices, land ownership, and resource management. The CYF demanded that officials handle the case with transparency and impartiality while following the rule of law. Failure to act now creates a dangerous divide.
"Prolonging the impasse would deepen mistrust and widen the gap between the public and the government," the CYF stated on October 9. The group warned the state that if they do not see a swift, constructive conclusion, they will exercise their democratic rights. They placed full responsibility on the government for any future unrest resulting from the current deadlock.
