Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court wants answers from the Assam government. Justice Sanjay Kumar Medhi ordered the state to respond to a petition challenging the job status of Special Chief Secretary for Forests M K Yadava. Amarjyoti Choudhury filed the petition to fight a May 14, 2026, notification that kept Yadava in his post.

Senior counsel B D Konwar argued the court must examine the legal standing behind this ongoing appointment. The state fought back. Additional Advocate General P N Goswami questioned the petitioner's motives and the timing of the lawsuit. The government noted the current arrangement expires on November 11, 2026. State lawyers also claimed the petitioner failed to show a personal connection to the role, arguing "a person seeking such relief should have a connection with the matter."

The state highlighted past legal hurdles for the official. A Division Bench already dismissed a prior challenge to his appointment in PIL No. 18 of 2025 on March 18, 2025. Another case, PIL No. 57 of 2026, also involves this situation. Justice Medhi set the next hearing for November 4, 2026. The petitioner must serve notice to Yadava via speed post within two days.
