Meghalaya Launches Performance Index to Track 11,443 Schools

Shillong: Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui launched the Meghalaya School Performance Grading Index (MSPGI) 2025-26 on July 24. The framework covers all 11,443 recognized schools across the state’s 12 districts. It relies on certified UDISE+ 2025-26 data.

The system evaluates schools on 43 indicators across five domains: accessibility, digital education, infrastructure, NEP activities, and quality parameters. Each school earns a composite score out of 1,000 points. Grades range from Utkarsh to Akanshi-10. No school hit the top Utkarsh grade this cycle.

Jyoti Sroat School Higher Secondary took the top spot with 930 points. Army Public School Shillong followed with 924. Of the top 100 schools, 74 are private. East Khasi Hills claims 48 of those top spots.

The minister framed the index as a tool for progress. He said, "The MSPGI is intended to serve as a diagnostic and planning tool rather than merely a ranking system." It aims to help school heads and committees identify institutional gaps.

This launch mirrors the state's recent progress on the national stage. Meghalaya climbed from an Akanshi-3 to an Akanshi-1 rating under the national PGI 2.0. The state reached a record score of 525.71 points in 2025-26, up from 401.62 in 2022-23. The department noted the MSPGI does not replace academic inspections. It functions as a roadmap for support from block and district authorities.
