Meghalaya Launches New Ranking System for 11,400 Schools

Shillong: Meghalaya Education Minister launched the Meghalaya School Performance Grading Index on July 24. This system tracks all 11,443 recognized schools spread across 12 districts. It relies on certified UDISE+ data from 2025-26. Officials want better data. The framework evaluates schools on 43 indicators split into five domains: Accessibility, Digital Education, Infrastructure Facilities, National Education Policy activities, and Quality Parameters.

Schools receive a report card based on a 1,000-point scale. They fall into 17 performance grades, starting at Utkarsh for top performers and ending at Akanshi-10 for those needing intensive support. The Minister said, "The MSPGI is intended to serve as a diagnostic and planning tool rather than merely a ranking system." This initiative mimics the Union Ministry of Education model but targets individual campuses.

State leaders hope this helps school heads and management committees find gaps in their operations. Meghalaya saw its own national score climb to 525.71 points this year, up from 401.62 in 2022-23. The state officially moved out of the lowest performance band to reach Akanshi-1 status. The department stated that this index works alongside existing inspections rather than replacing them, as it does not measure specific student learning outcomes.
