Home Guard Killed by Falling Poles in Ri-Bhoi Traffic Accident

Shillong: A Home Guard officer died Wednesday evening while managing traffic at Narbong in Ri-Bhoi district. Magelan Sohkhlet, a resident of Pahamsohthri, was on duty near Byrnihat at 6:35 PM when two trucks collided. The crash sent heavy electric poles crashing down onto him.

A pickup truck, registered AS 25 EC 3468, was hauling the poles when it slammed into a second truck, identified as AS 01 FC 9640, which was loaded with coke. The force of the impact triggered the deadly collapse. The victim died instantly. Responders rushed Sohkhlet to the Byrnihat PHC, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The driver of the pickup, Gandhi Kalita from Kamrup Metro, Assam, initially ran from the crash site. He later surrendered to Byrnihat police. Authorities identified the second driver as John Paul Khardewsaw of New Nongstoin. Police completed all legal formalities and turned the body over to the family for burial. An official investigation into the incident is under way.
