CM Sangma Touts Eight Years of Meghalaya Growth

Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma took the stage at Polo Ground on Saturday to highlight his administration’s eight-year record. He hoisted the National Flag for the ninth consecutive time. He claimed the state has evolved from a remote corner of the northeast into a hub for tourism, horticulture, and sports.

Sangma drew a parallel between the government and local landmarks. He said, "Perseverance, persistence and possibility had guided the government’s work." The state’s living root bridges now serve as India’s nomination for the UNESCO World Heritage List for 2026.

Economic figures show the state is the third fastest-growing in India. The economy has more than doubled since 2018. Over 3,200 km of roads now connect remote areas in Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Hills. The state also recorded a 56 percent drop in maternal deaths and a 40 percent decline in infant mortality since 2020. The CM Safe Motherhood Scheme reached one lakh pregnant women, including 15,800 high-risk cases.

Water infrastructure saw a massive spike. Rural tap-water coverage jumped from 4,550 households in 2019 to 5.47 lakh today. Forest conservation remains a priority, with 63,000 hectares protected under GREEN Meghalaya Plus. Agriculture also expanded, as CM FARM+ now supports 25,000 farmers across 12 districts.

Education metrics are trending up. The state’s Performance Grading Index score rose from 448 to 525. SSLC pass rates climbed from 57 percent in 2018 to 97.2 percent, while HSSLC results hit 86.6 percent. A new pay structure for 23,000 teachers begins April 1, 2026.

Tourism has surged, drawing 18 lakh annual visitors. The government is now eyeing Vision 2032 to dictate future growth. Major projects like the Shillong-Silchar High-Speed Corridor and airport expansion lead the charge.
