Shillong: Meghalaya kicked off a week-long celebration for Handloom Week this Friday. Textiles Minister Metbah Lyngdoh opened the event at the State Guest House in Shillong. The sector keeps 50,000 rural households afloat. It is a massive workforce. Women account for over 70 percent of those workers.
Lyngdoh walked through stalls displaying local crafts during the launch. He also accepted the Indian Tricolour for the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. The minister wants people to see more than just a paycheck in these textiles. He stated, "Each weave, he said, carries elements of the state's traditions and history." The state government is pushing new programs to back farmers, spinners, and weavers with better infrastructure and skill training.
Officials are aiming to connect artisans to bigger markets. The current National Handloom Day theme is Weaving for Innovation and Sustainability. Lyngdoh called for tighter teamwork between designers, entrepreneurs, and schools. He believes blending old skills with modern style will open doors to e-commerce and global buyers. Meghalaya is already seeing gains in its Ryndia, or Eri silk, industry. Principal Secretary F.R. Kharkongor joined senior officials and local weavers at the inaugural session.
