Imphal: Former United National Liberation Front chairman R.K. Sanayaima Singh, also known as Meghen, pushed for unity in Manipur today. He wants people to look past ethnic divides. Meghen spoke at the Manipur Press Club during the release of the book Zomi: Reclaiming Identity and Brotherhood. Co-authors Naorem Mohen and Anthony Naulak wrote the text to clarify the history of the Paite-Zomi community.
The event, presided over by Dr. Kiran Yendrembam, emphasized peaceful coexistence following the ethnic violence that broke out in May 2023. Meghen argued that while communities must keep their distinct identities, they should also recognize their shared social and cultural ties. He urged the public to rely on documentary evidence and scholarly research instead of conflicting ethnic narratives.
Historian Dr. Takhellambam Bhabhananda warned against weaponizing history for territorial gains. He noted that cultural identity and sovereignty are separate issues. Naorem Mohen echoed this sentiment, stating, "Examining one community's history should not diminish the historical position or rights of another."
Anthony Naulak highlighted the necessity of recording oral traditions, clan genealogies, and village histories alongside colonial records. The authors plan to donate book proceeds to help internally displaced people. This aid will reach families currently in Imphal, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi.
