Shillong: Ka Lympung Ki Seng Kynthei, an umbrella group for 25 local women’s organizations, is pushing the state government to restore order in Shillong. The demand comes after a KSU bike rally on Wednesday spiraled into widespread violence.
Protesters targeted historical figures during the unrest. Vandals desecrated a bust of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and damaged a statue of Swami Vivekananda at R&R Colony. The KLKSK called these acts entirely unacceptable.
Tensions remain high. The group wants the government to host talks with KSU representatives immediately to cool the situation. "As women’s organisations, we feel that the government should seriously examine the genuine issues raised by the student body," the KLKSK noted in a statement released Sunday.
Police drew criticism for a nighttime raid on the KSU office at Jaiaw. The women’s coalition argues that officers failed to involve the local Dorbar Shnong in the operation. They believe earlier consultation with local leaders would have stopped the escalation.
