Shillong: Shillong police picked up KSU general secretary Mihngi Samuel Kharbani on Thursday. The arrest stems from the August 19 violence at the CBI office in Mawdiangdiang. East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem confirmed the move following a lengthy investigation. Officers also dragged in KSU executive member Celestine Lyngdoh for questioning.
Authorities summoned both men under Section 35(3) of the BNSS. The Special Investigation Team scrutinized the pair to see if they took part in the riot. Evidence proved Kharbani was there. Police locked him up. "The investigation remains under way and further arrests could follow if evidence establishes the involvement of other persons," Syiem said.
Lyngdoh walked free after the sit-down. Investigators verified his alibi and checked the scene, finding no proof he participated in the chaos. He was released after they cleared his name.
Kharbani marks the fifth leader from the Khasi Students' Union to face handcuffs over the August 19 incident. He joins KSU president Raymond Kharjana, vice-president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, general secretary Reuben Najiar, and assistant organising secretary Jeremiah Pohthmi in judicial custody. Detectives are still hunting for more leads.
