Shillong: Voice of the People Party president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit hammered the district administration today. He blames intelligence failures and weak security for the violence that erupted in Shillong on August 19. Authorities missed the mark. Basaiawmoit insists officials should have spotted the troublemakers long before the rally began.
The Khasi Students Union had already pledged to keep the demonstration peaceful. They even gave their members strict instructions to behave. Basaiawmoit argued that these public promises did not excuse the government from doing its job. "The KSU had made it very clear that it was going to be a peaceful protest," Basaiawmoit stated.
The VPP leader noted that the administration simply granted a permit and stepped back. This was a mistake. He claims that groups opposed to the KSU or the VPP likely used the gathering to stir up chaos. The intelligence team failed to stop these outside actors. Basaiawmoit demanded tough action against anyone caught turning a protest into a riot. He maintains that better security would have blocked the agitators from hijacking the event.
