Shillong: Meghalaya officials are waiting for an internal report from NEIGRIHMS following the alleged molestation of a minor girl by a male nurse. Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla confirmed on Tuesday that the hospital is conducting an inquiry into the incident. The state government plans to review those findings before deciding on further intervention.
The Khasi Students’ Union is pushing for a faster response. They want the East Khasi Hills police to arrest the male nurse immediately. The group claims the hospital mishandled the situation and delayed accountability. The alleged attack happened on July 4, shortly after the victim underwent an appendix operation. KSU members report the girl was left alone in an observation room without female staff or family present. She lacked the strength to call for help after her surgery.
Separately, the state is pushing for an upgrade to the facility. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will lead a delegation to New Delhi to lobby for Institute of National Importance status for NEIGRIHMS. Health Minister Shylla said the Union Health Minister and the Parliamentary Committee on Health are reviewing the request. The Centre demanded specific documentation to move forward. Officials are currently finalizing these papers. Shylla noted, “We are waiting for the report and based on the report, we will take action and if necessary even intervene.”
