Shillong: A Meghalaya court sentenced Deepak Debnath to six years of simple imprisonment. He attacked a minor boy with a sharp knife in 2022. The case ended on October 7, 2026, when District and Sessions Judge D.R. Kharbteng delivered the conviction.

The trouble began on August 22, 2022. An FIR filed at the Bholaganj Police Outpost claimed Debnath tried to kill the complainant's son by chopping his neck. Police registered the case at Shella Police Station under Sections 307 and 326 of the Indian Penal Code. UBSI R. Ranee investigated the file. Authorities filed a charge sheet on February 10, 2023.

Judge Kharbteng ruled on Sessions Case No. 04(T)2023. He ordered Debnath to pay a fine of Rs 10,000. Failing to pay adds one month to the term. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the sentence on October 23. The official statement noted the court reached the verdict after evaluating the evidence, stating: "In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional month of simple imprisonment."
