Guwahati: A court in Dibrugarh, Assam, sentenced five men to life imprisonment in separate murder cases. Prosecutors claim this marks the first time five defendants received life terms simultaneously in the district. The Additional District and Sessions Judge also sentenced one man to four years of rigorous imprisonment for attempted murder.
Police constable Vicky Chetia received a life sentence for murdering his pregnant wife. He shot her with his service carbine at the Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station. Police arrested Chetia and filed a chargesheet before the court delivered the guilty verdict.
The court also sentenced Chukram Murha to life imprisonment and issued a Rs 10,000 fine. Rajiv Chungkung drew a life sentence and a Rs 50,000 fine for the murders of a landlord and his wife in Bairagimath. Raju Chetia received a life term and a Rs 10,000 fine for murder. Dipu Mesh faces life in prison for the brutal murder of a relative. Putul Garh received four years of rigorous imprisonment for attempted murder.
Additional Public Prosecutors Chinmoyee Dutta and Nilotpal Phukan represented the state. Regarding the outcomes, prosecutors stated, "The court has delivered justice."
