Guwahati: A Dibrugarh court delivered six convictions in one day on Thursday. The Additional Sessions Judge handed down five life sentences for murder and one prison term for a separate offense. Justice moved fast. Each murder conviction fell under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, resulting in life sentences plus a fine of Rs 10,000 for each defendant.
The court finalized the following cases: Sessions Case No. 131/2019 (State vs Sukram Murah), Sessions Case No. 227/2022 (State vs Rajib Sukrang), Sessions Case No. 188/2022 (State vs Biki Chetia), Sessions Case No. 258/2023 (State vs Raju Chutia), and Sessions Case No. 300/2023 (State vs Dipu Mech). The presiding judge confirmed the sentencing and fines for all five men.
In the sixth case, Putul Garh faced charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The court sentenced Garh to four years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 for his actions in Sessions Case No. 330/2024. Additional Public Prosecutor Chinmoyee Dutta handled the state's case in these proceedings. Regarding the outcome, officials noted, "The judgments resulted in six convictions being recorded by the Additional Sessions Judge’s Court on a single day, including five life imprisonment sentences in murder cases."
