Shillong: Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla visited NEIGRIHMS on Wednesday to boost local access to top-tier care. He noted that residents of Meghalaya lag behind patients from other Northeastern states in using the facility despite its high-end technology. He wants the institute to become the go-to referral hub for locals. This must happen soon.
NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. (Dr.) Nalin Mehta promised new awareness campaigns across the state. They will also kill language barriers between staff and patients. The hospital will start sending specialists to local clinics. "The institute would prioritise outreach awareness programmes across the state and implement measures to address language barriers between patients and staff," Mehta stated. Regular meetings every three months will track these goals.
Officials plan to use federal cash from the Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi to top up Megha Health Insurance Scheme coverage for expensive cardiac and cancer treatments. Future expansion includes a Regional Cancer Centre, a new critical care block, and a rehab facility. Mehta also wants more dialysis capacity, organ transplants, a dental college, and more MBBS seats.
Granting Institute of National Importance status remains the key to fixing faculty gaps and speeding up new programs. Shylla committed to pitching this directly to the Union Health Minister. NEIGRIHMS will also train local doctors to sharpen their specialty skills.
