HNYF Backs KSU Demand for Meghalaya Security Law

Shillong: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) threw its support behind the Khasi Students Union on Wednesday. They demand the immediate rollout of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. HNYF president Sadon K. Blah accused the state government of misleading the public. The group claims officials ignored promises made since 2013.

Police identified 31 entry and exit points back when S.K. Jain served as DGP. The government promised land acquisition for these sites. This commitment persisted through various leadership changes, including the current MDA government. Work stalled. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic arrived.

The state built one entry-exit point at Umling in Ri-Bhoi district. It served as a testing site during the health crisis. Today, that structure functions as a food court. The HNYF blasted this development as a betrayal of public trust. "It is to note that the Umling Entry-Exit point as mandated by MRSSA metamorphosed into the Covid testing center and now into a food court. This is a big lie to the people of the state who demand the implementation of MRSSA, who demand the implementation of ILP and the government went back on its own Assembly Resolution on the implementation," the group stated.

Activists argue the government ignores essential anti-influx mechanisms. These include District Task Forces, visitor registration, and tracking rented housing. Officials claim these gaps exist because the principal Act remains under amendment. The HNYF calls this a hollow drama. They claim the government is stoking public anger by playing with local sentiment. The group intends to keep the pressure on until the state acts.
