Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) claims the Meghalaya government is inventing excuses to block the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA). KSU General Secretary Reuben Najiar blasted the administration on Saturday. He says officials are lying about why entry-exit points remain closed.
RTI filings prove the Ministry of Home Affairs has had zero input on the matter since 2016. Furthermore, legal challenges in the High Court are finished. No judicial roadblocks exist anymore. Najiar argues the government hides behind the 2019 amendment, which still waits for Presidential approval, just to avoid enforcing the original 2016 law.
The 2016 Act gives the state enough power to open check-gates right now. The planned facilitation centre at Umling sits idle despite this clear legal path. Influx into Meghalaya is surging. KSU links this jump to recent eviction drives in Assam and West Bengal. They believe the open border leaves the state wide open to trouble.
"Claims made by sections of the government are misleading the public," Najiar said. The union plans to team up with Dorbar Shnongs to force action on the 2016 law. They stressed that MRSSA is not a fix for all immigration issues. The KSU still wants the Inner Line Permit, as they view state laws as insufficient to fully control who enters Meghalaya.
