Shillong: The Jaintia Students Union is forcing a total overhaul of the 2026-27 MBBS and BDS seat allotment lists in Meghalaya. Education Secretary Bocheru Mi Pohsnem met with Director of Health Services Dr. L. Mylliem Umlong at Pasteur Hills on Monday to demand an immediate fix. The union claims the state’s current admission process ignores merit. High-scoring students lost preferred seats to lower-scoring peers.
One student at Serial No. 30 with a 439 score secured a spot at NEIGRIHMS while higher-scoring applicants were sidelined. Students are angry. The JSU alleges the Health Department broke promises made last year regarding a new Standard Operating Procedure. Despite sending detailed recommendations on October 5, 2025, and a reminder email on November 3, 2025, the department never released the updated guidelines. The union argues this failure directly caused the current crisis.
The department agreed to scrap the existing list following the meeting. Officials pledged to publish a new, merit-based list on Tuesday. Affected students must email grievances to [email protected] before the 10 pm deadline tonight. The JSU delegation, including Pysnhailang Suliang, Borntifulson Rupon, and Jefferson Shylla, insists the state must honor student preferences and follow a clear, transparent process moving forward.
