Shillong: Aaranyak’s Wildlife Genetics Laboratory is hosting its second advanced DNA training program from April 22 to April 29, 2027. Held at the lab’s Guwahati office on Kanaklata Path, the eight-day course covers genetic sampling, DNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis, and sequencing. Students will also learn data analysis, species identification, parentage testing, and population genetics.
Established in 2008, the laboratory is the only facility in North East India notified by the governments of Assam and Meghalaya for wildlife forensics under Section 329(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. It has resolved more than 200 criminal cases by providing evidence to government agencies.
Udayan Borthakur, director of the lab’s wildlife genetics division, emphasized the need to bridge the gap between classroom theory and field practice. "We aim to fill the gap between academic learning and real-world scientific applications," Borthakur said. The lab intends to train a new generation of scientists to support conservation and law enforcement.
The program accepts only eight participants. Faculty members, researchers, and master’s students in biological science disciplines can apply until January 7, 2027, at 5:00 PM IST via the website www.wildlifegeneticslab.in/wgl-training-april-27.
