Shillong: The Meghalaya Basin Management Agency signed a deal on Wednesday with the Spices Board of the Government of India. The agreement aims to boost spice cultivation across the state through technical cooperation. Experts will focus on sustainable farming methods.
MBMA Executive Director Gavede Sachin Shankar and Spices Board Secretary M. S. Manivannan signed the agreement. Project Director Dr. D. Vijay Kumar attended the ceremony in Shillong. This effort sits under the ADB-financed Integrated Eco-tourism and Sustainable Agri-based Livelihood Development Project.
The partnership targets three specific crops: Black Pepper, Large Cardamom, and Cinnamon. The Spices Board will provide technical expertise and guidance on scientific growing practices. They want to "develop high-value, spice-based livelihoods" for local communities. The goal is to build new economic opportunities by strengthening institutional ties across Meghalaya.
