Ri-Bhoi District Outlaws Roadside Cooking and Littering

Shillong: Ri-Bhoi authorities just cleared the streets. Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini issued a new order this Wednesday banning roadside cooking and littering across the district. The rules hit all tourist spots, viewpoints, and public roads with immediate effect.

The administration acted under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. Officials moved after the Meghalaya Tourism Department raised red flags about widespread environmental damage, failing sanitation, and general public nuisance. The order noted that these activities obstruct vehicular and pedestrian movement, pose fire hazards, and damage Meghalaya’s image as a tourism destination.

You cannot use firewood, charcoal, or LPG cylinders to cook on road shoulders anymore. The ban also targets any other combustible fuel. Dumping plastics, food scraps, bottles, or cans outside of designated trash areas is now illegal. The directive strictly forbids dumping waste in forests, water bodies, or drains. "The order noted that these activities obstruct vehicular and pedestrian movement, pose fire hazards, and damage Meghalaya’s image as a tourism destination," according to the official document.
