East Khasi Hills Bans Roadside Cooking and Littering

Shillong: East Khasi Hills officials have declared war on roadside mess. The District Magistrate issued an immediate ban on cooking and littering across all tourist spots and public roads in the district. Authorities cited Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, to enforce the new rules.

Firewood, charcoal, and LPG use on road shoulders is now illegal. The ban specifically targets the popular Shillong, Mawkdok, and Sohra route. This move responds to reports from the Director of Tourism about mounting trash and safety risks. Roadside kitchens have triggered serious fire hazards and constant traffic jams.

Dumping plastics, food waste, bottles, and cans into forests or drains is prohibited. The administration warned that these habits ruin the state's image. Authorities stated, "Such practices have led to environmental degradation, sanitation concerns, traffic obstructions, and fire hazards."

Violators face prosecution under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Officials aim to clean up the district and protect Meghalaya from further decay.
