Shillong: Locals in West Jaintia Hills named a waterfall after Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar this Sunday. Officials christened the site Sniawbhalang Dhar Waterfalls during a ceremony in the Amtharonh Pdeng Thangchap area of the Amlarem subdivision. It is a rare honor for a sitting deputy official.
Raid Buam, the local traditional authority, gifted the site. They credited Dhar for fixing management disputes at the nearby Krangshuri tourist spot and for his general development work. This marks the first such waterfall naming in the state. It follows the 2018 naming of a Shillong road after legislator Sanbor Shullai.
Dhar broke ground on a new tourism project at the site during the event. He also started an afforestation push under the Regeneration Meghalaya Project. This effort targets the planting of 20 lakh saplings in the Raid Buam forest. State officials including Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, and Amlarem SDO Vevotolu Kezo attended the ceremony.
Dhar promised to return soon to speed up regional tourism growth. He noted the state has pushed for 5,000 homestays to lure visitors. "The state is steadily emerging as a preferred travel destination," Dhar said. Raid Buam leaders also took time to felicitate the Deputy Chief Minister before the event concluded.
