Meghalaya Waterfall Named After Sitting Deputy CM Sniawbhalang Dhar

Shillong: A waterfall in the West Jaintia Hills district now bears the name of Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar. Officials christened the site Sniawbhalang Dhar Waterfalls during a Sunday event at Amtharonh Pdeng Thangchap in the Amlarem subdivision. It is a rare honor for a sitting official.

The Raid Buam traditional authority donated the site. They acted to recognize Dhar for settling disputes at the Krangshuri tourist spot and his general work in the region. The group also held a ceremony to felicitate the politician. This naming follows the 2018 precedent of the Sanbor Shullai Road in Shillong, which was the first road in the state to honor a sitting legislator.

Dhar pushed forward new plans at the event. He laid the foundation stone for a local tourism project and kicked off an afforestation drive. The Regeneration Meghalaya Project will plant 20 lakh saplings within the Raid Buam forest.

Tourism remains a top priority for the local government. Dhar told the crowd, "The state government has promoted around 5,000 homestays, besides hotels, to strengthen Meghalaya’s tourism sector, adding that the state is steadily emerging as a preferred travel destination." He promised to return soon to speed up the work.

Key local officials joined the celebration. Attendees included Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, Amlarem SDO Vevotolu Kezo, and leaders from Raid Buam.
