Guwahati: Dima Hasao officials issued a strict ban on roadside cooking and waste dumping effective immediately. District Magistrate Gayatri Devdas Hailing signed the order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The rules apply to all viewpoints, lay-bys, and open spaces across the district.

The ban hits hard on the Mandardisa-Harangajao stretch of National Highway 27 and the Mahur-Hangkram section of National Highway 137. Authorities cited rising environmental damage and safety risks. Roadside cooking often blocks traffic and draws animals into the path of vehicles.

Trash piles up fast. Visitors leave behind plastic bottles, food scraps, and disposable plates. The administration also banned public alcohol consumption to curb nuisance. Officials said the new rules are here to keep the area clean, stating the restrictions are "intended to preserve Dima Hasao’s natural beauty and ensure a cleaner, safer and more pleasant environment for tourists as well as local residents."

You cannot use LPG, kerosene, firewood, or charcoal grills in unauthorized areas. Tourists must carry their trash to designated dustbins or official collection points. Violators face immediate legal action.

Executive magistrates, police, and staff from transport, forest, tourism, and excise departments will patrol the routes. Cooking remains legal only at designated picnic spots or sites approved by the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council. These approved zones must maintain fire safety and waste management standards.
