Guwahati: The Middle Assam Koch-Rajbongshi Students Union took their fight to the top on August 18. They submitted a four-point memorandum to Forest Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah through Nagaon District Commissioner Debashis Sharma. The group wants an immediate end to illegal hill mining in central Assam. They claim the excavations are worsening regional flood risks.
Mining in the area often hides behind the mask of stone quarrying. The union explicitly named R.S. Gandhi as the individual behind the operations in the hills of Karbi Anglong and Jagiroad. Union secretary Ratul Kumar Rajbongshi warned that the environmental damage goes beyond simple land clearing. He stated, "unchecked hill mining in Karbi Anglong could have serious environmental consequences and may also pose a threat to wildlife in Kaziranga National Park."
The union demands quick intervention from the state government to protect the terrain and local habitats. They are holding firm. The organization promised a democratic movement if officials ignore their demands.

The union specifically characterized the environmental impact as a recurring threat, linking the mining directly to the flood cycles that plague the region. Officials have yet to respond to the ultimatum.
