Meghalaya Update: Secretariat Build Ahead of Schedule as Local Agencies Launch Key Drives

Shillong: Work on the new Meghalaya Secretariat complex is running fast. Construction in the New Shillong Township is now hitting the halfway mark. Officials expect the G+6 structure to open in September 2027. This beats the original April 2028 deadline by seven months. Badri Rai and Company is handling the 53-acre project at a cost exceeding Rs 1,100 crore. Four floors are already up, and crews are currently pushing to finish slab work on the final two levels.

Shillong is also cleaning up its act. The East Khasi Hills District Administration launched a drive to pull down dangling, disorganized cables. Workers targeted the DC Office, IGP area, and Raj Bhavan to boost safety and curb eyesores. Authorities ordered service providers to maintain wires or face immediate removal. Further citywide operations are coming soon.

Meanwhile, the Jaintia Fishing and Environmental Protection Association is cracking down on local poaching. President DH Pde announced a total ban on net fishing near the Mutong and Syntu Ksiar dams. Violators face fines up to Rs 20,000. The group also capped fishing rods at seven per person to guard spawning populations. "To encourage public vigilance, 50 per cent of the fine amount will be given as a reward to informants, whose identities will remain confidential."

The Meghalaya State Skill Development Society held its latest recruitment drive at Iooksi. Roughly 127 local youths attended the Wednesday session. Another event will take place on August 21 at the Nongtalang Khlashympa Community Hall. Elsewhere, the Directorate of Prosecution trained 120 lawyers on digital case management at the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute. The program connects the state to national criminal justice databases.

Political friction is rising in the legal community. The All India Lawyers Union is calling for the resignation of Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra. They claim his leadership is politically compromised. A national protest is set for August 21 to demand a full overhaul of the council.
