Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha demanded a shift in social attitudes on Thursday to better protect women and children. He met with the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Tripura Commission for Women at the state secretariat to map out a strategy. He wants to stop child marriage and substance abuse. Administrative fixes are not enough.
Saha called for sustained efforts to boost women through education, skill building, and economic independence. He urged the state to identify local problems and provide counseling. He plans to use seminars, workshops, and theatre to reach people at the grassroots. "Administrative measures alone would not be sufficient and that a positive change in social attitudes must be brought about through sustained awareness campaigns," Saha said.
The Chief Minister wants prominent citizens, intellectuals, and women's self-help groups to lead these drives. He also reviewed the state's children's homes. He ordered a focus on their schooling and future self-reliance. Tapan Kumar Das, the Special Secretary of the Social Welfare and Social Education Department, presented a report on school visits and anti-marriage efforts. Minister Tinku Roy and chairpersons Jharna Debbarma and Jayanti Debbarma joined officials like Kiran Gitte and P.K. Goel at the session.
