Agartala: Police arrested two auto-rickshaw drivers for harassing passengers at Agartala's Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport. The arrests followed a viral confrontation involving local drivers and an Uber auto-rickshaw.
Binita Ghosh and her ailing parents returned from medical treatment in Chennai on July 24. They booked an Uber to reach Siddhi Ashram. Outside the airport gate, a group of local drivers blocked their path. One driver grabbed the ignition key from the Uber operator, Sriram Debnath. The group then surrounded the family and hurled verbal abuse. They claimed no authority could stop them. Debnath eventually retrieved his keys and completed the trip.
The Transport Department identified the accused as Jhutan Acharjee, driving TR-01-F-2988, and Dipankar Debnath, driving TR-01-K-2365. Both men now face criminal charges. Officials verified the incident using video footage. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury ordered the crackdown. The state cancelled both drivers' licenses and permits. The government aims to restore order at the transport hub.
Minister Chowdhury stated, "We will take strict action, and if necessary, further measures will also be taken. We will soon launch Uber and other transport services from the airport premises as well."
Two formal complaints triggered the police investigation. Ghosh and Debnath both reported intimidation and financial loss. The case has sparked statewide demands for mandatory uniforms and guaranteed access for app-based transport services. Police are continuing their investigation. Officials promise further action to secure the airport area.
