Agartala: Sekhar Debbarma is back. The veteran aviation professional just took charge as the Director of Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala. He brings nearly 30 years of experience with the Airports Authority of India to his home state. This is a homecoming. Debbarma started his career in 1995 as an Air Traffic Control Manager at Kolkata Airport. He later worked in Agartala and Guwahati.
He previously served as the MBB Airport Director from 2004 to 2022. He spent the last two years working at major hubs in Delhi, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad after leaving Agartala in September 2024. Now, he returns to lead the site he knows best. He addressed staff and media shortly after stepping into his old office.
Debbarma described himself as a “son of the soil” during his first day back. He wants to push the airport forward while keeping local culture at the front. He plans to promote local goods and may start making public announcements in Kokborok. Adding this indigenous language would help travelers and showcase the state’s culture. Airport staff expect his national experience to improve services. They hope his leadership will grow the airport while honoring the identity of Tripura.
