Shillong: Assam police arrested five men Monday night following a sting in the Badarpur area. Officers caught four Bangladeshi nationals and one Indian citizen during the operation. They suspect the group coordinated a cross-border smuggling ring for cattle and buffaloes.
Police intercepted the four suspects at Mahakal village. The detainees include Rezaul Karim, Sabbir Ahmed, Rachel Ahmed, and Hasan Ahmed Tahim. All four live in the Sylhet district of Bangladesh. Authorities also picked up Fazal Uddin, a resident of Jagadishpur village in the Cachar district. Officials believe Uddin worked as a middleman for the operation.
Preliminary findings suggest the four men entered India through the Tukurgram area. They allegedly prepared to move livestock back across the border. Security agencies are now tracing the route used to cross the international boundary. Police are questioning the suspects to identify other members of the ring. "The investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken based on findings," an official said.
Authorities remain on high alert along the border. Investigators are searching for additional accomplices involved in the illicit trade. They have yet to announce if any livestock was recovered during the raid. Legal teams continue to review the evidence to determine specific charges.
