Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court rejected a Central Bureau of Investigation appeal on Tuesday, September 22. The court stood by the acquittal of Congress leader Ripun Bora regarding the Daniel Topno murder case. It is a major blow to the agency. The original trial court previously cleared Bora and co-accused Pulin Phukan in February 2014, citing a lack of solid evidence against them.
Tea community leader Daniel Topno died in the Gohpur area of Assam back in September 2000. Federal agents took over the case in 2001. They eventually named Bora as a primary suspect, but the lower court found the case insufficient. The court stated that they were acquitting Bora after finding "insufficient material against him." This final order from the High Court puts an end to the long-running legal challenge.
