Aizawl: Mizoram police and federal agencies moved hard against smugglers this week. They pulled in a massive haul of meth, areca nuts, and illicit liquor across three separate district operations. The state-wide crackdown began on Monday.
A joint team from the Narcotics Control Bureau, the District Special Branch, and the Serchhip Police CID stopped a Myanmar national on Wednesday. They caught Lalpanliana, who hails from Falam, near the Tuichang bridge in Serchhip. Officers found 14.26 kg of meth tablets. The stash totals 1.5 lakh pills worth Rs 11.4 crore. The Narcotics Control Bureau has launched an investigation into the case. Meth is a highly addictive synthetic drug.
Khawzawl Police struck early Thursday morning. They pulled over a truck near Chawngtlai village and confiscated 180 bags of dry areca nuts. Each bag weighed 80 kg, bringing the total value to Rs 36 lakh. Officers handed the driver, the truck, and the goods over to the Customs Preventive Force in Champhai for further legal action.
Local vigilantes helped the Lunglei District Special Branch on Monday. They uncovered 633.3 litres of locally made liquor at Hauruang in Lunglei district. Police arrested two people during the raid. Regarding the ongoing efforts to curb illegal trade, police stated, "Further legal action has been initiated in the respective cases."
