Protesters clash with police in Silchar over fake certificate allegations

Guwahati: Tension boiled over in Silchar on Thursday, November 5. A crowd of protesters descended on the District Sports Association as newly elected Silchar Municipal Corporation councillors arrived to take their oaths of office. The demonstrators claim these officials won their seats using forged certificates. The scene outside the venue turned volatile quickly.

Protesters pressed the administration to address formal complaints regarding the alleged fraud. They argued officials ignored the warnings before the election results were finalized. Local police stepped in to form a blockade. Officers stopped the group before they could reach the oath-taking ceremony. Frustration mounted as the crowd argued with security personnel.

The standoff triggered a heated exchange between the two sides. One protester stated, "The administration's failure to act despite complaints being lodged over the alleged irregularities" remained the primary source of anger. The area surrounding the District Sports Association stayed on high alert as the dispute continued throughout the day.
