Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party holds a commanding lead in 30 of the 40 wards contested during the inaugural Silchar Municipal Corporation election. Early results from Tuesday show the Asom Gana Parishad ahead in three wards, Congress leading in four, and independent candidates holding ground in the remaining three. The election is high stakes.

Counting began at 8 am at the Ramnagar ISBT campus under heavy security. District officials set up seven halls, each operating 14 counting tables. Depending on the size of the electorate in each ward, clerks are cycling through three to four rounds to finalize the tallies.

The corporation consists of 42 total wards, but two were decided before the polls opened. BJP candidates secured those seats unopposed. Voters hit the booths on October 3 to shape the first elected house of the city. Over 2.7 lakh people were eligible to vote, and the district reported a turnout of roughly 71 percent.

Security remains a top priority. Police and civil administration teams are guarding the campus to prevent disruptions during the tabulation process. Officials stated, "Necessary measures have been put in place to ensure that the counting process is completed smoothly and without disruption." The counting continues as the administration moves toward the final mandate.
