Guwahati: The Trinamool Congress lost its grip on Cachar district Sunday. District president Rajesh Deb and senior leader Mohan Lal Das led 48 other workers into the BJP. This mass defection hit hard. It comes less than a month before the October 3 Silchar Municipal Corporation election.
Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia welcomed the group at the Cachar district office. Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev watched the proceedings. Dev famously swapped her own party loyalty for the BJP back in June. She represents a major political shift in the Barak Valley.
Saikia called the arrival of new members an expansion of the BJP family. He believes these recruits will tighten the party network throughout the region. Saikia noted that Dev remains tied to the Barak Valley despite her election to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal. "Together, every karyakarta will work for the development of the region, the State, and the country," Saikia stated.
The BJP is hunting for total control in the city. They want a clean sweep in the upcoming civic vote. The Trinamool Congress now faces a massive hurdle. Their local organization is reeling from the loss of key brass.
