Guwahati: Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia issued a final ultimatum to party rebels. Quit the race or face the door. Any member seeking a seat who failed to land a ticket and chose to run as an Independent now faces a five-year expulsion from the party. Saikia delivered the warning while campaigning in Silchar to shore up support for official nominees.
This election marks a historic moment for Cachar district as the first corporation vote in nearly 150 years. The BJP is fielding candidates in 38 wards, while their alliance partner, the AGP, holds four. Saikia made the stakes clear, stating, "party functionaries who entered the fray as Independent candidates against the official BJP nominees would face disciplinary action."
The party aims to clear the field of internal competition. While some Congress and Independent candidates have already pulled their names from the ballot, BJP rebels remain a hurdle. Saikia demands immediate withdrawal to avoid the five-year ban. The leadership is pushing hard to keep the ranks tight as they battle for control of the new corporation.

The political heat is rising. Congress leader Prithviraj Sathe accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of breaking the Model Code of Conduct by announcing a Rs 100-crore development package for Silchar on Wednesday. The code covers the entire 42-ward corporation area for the October 3 vote. Sathe also slammed the Election Commission, claiming they purged too many names from electoral rolls during recent revisions.
Former Silchar district Congress president Abhijit Pal claims a syndicate runs the municipal body under the thumb of a local legislator. Meanwhile, the BJP is leaning into its platform. Finance and Forest Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah helped release the party manifesto, dubbed the Municipal Area Development Sankalp Patra, to promise a modern, progressive city. While the total count is 42 wards, the party already claims two seats won unopposed. Votes will be tallied on October 6.
