Guwahati: Candidates for all 42 wards of the Silchar Municipal Corporation finalized their bids on September 11. They submitted paperwork at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School between 11 am and 3 pm. The final day saw a massive display of political muscle.
BJP members and their allies from the Asom Gana Parishad marched from the Shillong District Sports Association ground. They carried banners and shouted slogans. Meanwhile, Congress supporters walked from Indira Bhawan to reach the same venue.
Assam minister Parimal Suklabaidya joined the BJP procession. He told Aaj Tak that the party remains focused on building a Congress-mukt Bharat. He highlighted that Sushmita Dev, formerly a longtime Congress figure, now campaigns for the BJP and shouts Bharat Mata Ki Jai.
Dev remains firm in her new alliance. She labeled the race a jackpot election and predicted a total sweep for her party. She claimed the Congress has devolved into a mere business operation. She stated, "My father was a very senior Congress leader, but the Congress that existed then is no longer there."
The city votes on October 3. Election officials will count the ballots on October 4. Both major parties are fighting to secure their grip on this key urban constituency.
